Life’s a struggle, but you can win! :-)
This was the topic at a “Queensland Law Society” breakfast event in Brisbane in 2012 and the Guest Speaker was the one and only Erin Brockovich! :-)

Who’s watched the film “Erin Brockovich?”
How would you describe Erin after watching the film?
Say the name Erin Brockovich and you think strong, tough, stubborn and sexy. Erin is all that and definitely more!
She is a modern-day “David” who loves a good brawl with today’s “Goliaths”. She’s gutsy and thrives on being the VOICE for those who don’t know how to YELL.
She is a REBEL. She is a FIGHTER. She is a MOTHER. She is a WOMAN. She is you and me. :-)
Erin is no stranger to struggle in her life.
Erin Brockovich-Ellis, Legal Clerk and Environmental Activist, was born Erin Pattee in Lawrence, Kansas on 22nd June 1960 to Frank (industrial engineer) and Betty Jo (journalist).
Erin was dyslexic in school and often came home with grades of ‘D’ or ‘F’ on her report card.
The most precious gift she received from her parents .... they always told her she could do anything she set her mind to if she learned to focus her amazing energy and Erin showed dogged persistence and an unwavering ability to fight hard for what’s right and to speak up and speak out for those who were unable to do this for themselves.
She attended Lawrence High School, Kansas State University and graduated with an Associate in Applied Arts Degree from Wades Business College in Dallas, Texas. Erin worked as a Management Trainee for Kmart in 1981 but quit after a few months and entered a Beauty Pageant. After winning Miss Pacific Coast in 1981, she gave up pageant life and moved with her husband and two children and settled in Reno, Nevada. After divorcing, the single mother became a Secretary at a Brokerage firm where she met and married her second husband. That marriage was short lived and Erin was a single mother .... again!
When Erin crossed paths with lawyer Ed Masry, this was a turning point and changed the course of both their lives.
The story and the eventual film helped make “Erin Brockovich” a household name. Over time, Erin realised that she could use her notoriety to spread positive messages of PERSONAL EMPOWERMENT and to ENCOURAGE others to stand up and make a difference.
It’s now been 14 years since Julia Roberts starred in the Oscar-winning 2000 feature film “Erin Brockovich”. Since then, Erin hasn’t been resting on her laurels .... she continues to FIGHT HARD and WIN BIG!! :-)
She has also hosted “Challenge America” on ABC and “Final Justice” on Zone Reality.
Erin is the President of Brockovich Research & Consulting and is currently working as a Consultant for New York law firms which have a focus on personal injury claims for asbestos exposure, and also Shine Lawyers in Australia.
Erin is currently involved in numerous environmental projects worldwide and is one of the most requested speakers on the international lecture circuit.
Erin Brockovich is a true hero, whose icon status and “stick-to-it-iveness” only FUELS HER DETERMINATION to EXPOSE INJUSTICE and LEND HER VOICE TO THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE ONE.
She has requests for help in ground water contamination complaints in every state of the US, here in Australia and other international hot spots. Erin is working with Google to map and plot areas of concern. What is of concern to me personally is Erin mentioned that Australia already has 8 areas of interest. Erin also mentioned the dangers of coal seam gas, a process that is termed “fracking” in the USA.
Gladstone, in our own backyard, was said to have a chemically polluted harbour and all the fish tested have lesions, rashes and open sores on their bodies. Erin said the pictures were disturbing to look at. If this continues, we could be on track to wipe out a whole food chain.
Erin spoke of a new movie released in the USA in May 2012, Last Call at the Oasis, which is about our WATER SUPPLY. If you’ve seen the movie “Food Inc.”, this new movie is just as confronting and scary for us around what’s really happening with our water and the levels of impurity and scarcity we may face in years to come.
I had the honour and privilege of meeting and speaking with Erin at a Queensland Law Society breakfast event in Brisbane in May 2012 and I can honestly say “I believe, I’m concerned for our environment and I’m on her side”.
We need to support and protect our environment, mother earth, our planet, to preserve and maintain the balance and harmony, the plentiful supply of natural resources, to monitor and legislate where needed, otherwise the consequences could be fatal for us all.
Erin Brockovich is a 51 year old woman who continues to make a stand for what she believes in, for justice and for what is fair, around the world, despite the struggles, sacrifices, heartache and pain she experiences along the way.
No matter our age, gender, marital status or education, we can all STAND UP for what we BELIEVE in, SPEAK out, be HEARD and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!! To feel totally FREE, I need to be at peace in my heart, soul and body, I need to be at peace with the environment in which I live, to ensure I live a life I love! :-)
