I have had the honour and pleasure of meeting and learning from many inspirational speakers and visionaries over the years …. and one of these people is Dr Stephen R. Covey and his 7 habits of highly effective people.
Over his lifetime, Stephen inspired millions with the power of universal principles. As he travelled the globe many times over, his message was a simple one: for true success and meaning in life, we must be principle-centered in all areas of life. A teacher at heart, he often taught: ”there are 3 constants in life: change, choice and principles.”
From the oval office, the board room, community halls and to the school house and family room, Stephen taught the mindset, skillset and toolset found in the 7 habits of Highly effective people, his seminal work. His legacy is woven in the 7 habits, and, just as these habits are universal and timeless, so is Stephen R. Covey, who is admired around the world for his simple, yet powerful, universal, timeless teachings.
Covey was the author of acclaimed books, including the international best seller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which has sold more than 25 million copies in 40 languages throughout the world. Other best sellers authored by Covey include First Things First, Principle-Centered Leadership, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, and The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.
Stephen Covey passed away on July 16, 2012 and his legacy to the world is Principle-Centered Leadership and his many contributions will live on through the principles he loved, taught and espoused.
I enjoy working with the The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People 50 card deck and find it a helpful resource to support me to stay focussed and on track. The card deck includes the following:
1. Be Proactive
2. Begin with the End in Mind
3. Put First Things First
4. Think Win-Win
5. Seek First to Understand, Then Be Understood
6. Synergize
7. Sharpen the Saw
In your day-to-day life, remember to be effective rather than “busy” and be mindful of where you’re allocating your time and whether you are focusing on your priorities, goals, dreams and desires (or not!). Being effective is a learned skill and there are many resources available to support and assist you to determine where you’re heading and to stay on track.
When you’re focused, you have an aim and a direction. You know where you’re going …. you’re the captain of your ship and master of your destiny! Keeping it simple and having a plan and structure supports you to stay on track, making the path and journey more enjoyable and rewarding and providing greater peace, choice and freedom. Wherever you’re heading in life, be sure to live a life you love! :-)
